Parenting Far from Home
When I became a mother in Canada, thousands of miles from my family in Zimbabwe, the absence of a support system was undeniable. No aunties were dropping by with warm meals or cousins to lend a hand during long nights. I was building a life, a home, a career, all while raising children in a new land. And like so many women, I was trying to pour from a cup that was running dry.
In conversations with fellow mothers, I realized this story wasn’t unique. Across newcomer and immigrant communities, countless women are quietly carrying the emotional and mental weight of caregiving, all while striving to build futures for their families. Many of us are holding multiple roles: worker, wife, entrepreneur, mother, with little to no communal cushion to land on.
That realization was both heavy and galvanizing. I knew we needed something different. A solution that honored our realities and built something new out of the old traditions of care and connection.
A New Kind of Community
That’s what led to the creation of LiiT Care Connect. What began as a childcare platform quickly evolved into something deeper. It became a virtual village. A place where care could be exchanged, not out of obligation, but through trust and mutual respect.
The goal wasn’t only to make childcare easier to access. It was to reintroduce the idea of collective care in a society that often pushes us to go it alone.
