Sixteen years ago, I ventured into photography, covering events and documenting moments as they unfolded. Over time, it became clear that taking photos was not enough. I wanted to create something intentional. I left a career in banking to pursue authenticity and capture the strength, beauty, and depth of human stories.
Honouring Women Through Art
Photography is a tool for visibility, and visibility creates influence. When women see themselves reflected as strong and accomplished, it transforms their confidence. A female business leader, captured in a way that showcases power and femininity, shifts how she is perceived in her industry.
Celebrating women, particularly those over 40, is a focal point. I founded the BOLD Woman Over 40 project to rewrite the story of ageing. Society largely views ageing as a decline. In reality, it is a time of strength and influence. Several young women have shared how they now look forward to their 40s, proving that beauty and relevance have no expiry date.
Defining Moments
Many defining moments reinforce the impact of this work. For instance, a 73-year-old joined the BOLD Over 40 campaign. After her session, her confidence skyrocketed. She joined an agency to be an extra in films, signed up for online dating, and embraced a version of herself she had never allowed to exist.
I had my family drive for three hours to make a session. “This was an experience we didn’t even realize we needed.” was their testimony. Again and again, photography has proven to be useful for reshaping self-perception and helping people reclaim their power.
Removing Systemic Barriers
Photography has been historically male-dominated. Building a career as a Black woman, in this space meant carving out a new path. The first year in business in Canada was a defining one. We leased a shared studio but without warning, the landlord abruptly evicted the business. Later, it became clear that there had been discomfort with the success being built there.
That moment could have been a setback, but instead, it became fuel. A new studio was built. That space has now been home to five years of growth and proof that success does not require permission.
Art and Representation
Art shapes culture. It challenges perceptions and amplifies voices that might otherwise go unheard. When art is woven into community spaces, it becomes more than an image it becomes a movement. Seeing more Black women both behind and in front of the camera shows young Black girls that their beauty and their stories matter.
Countless women are doing extraordinary things, but without visibility, their impact remains a well-kept secret. Every time a woman sees herself reflected in a way she never has before, progress is made. When women see themselves, the world sees them too.
What Comes Next?
The next chapter is about amplifying women’s stories on a larger scale. The BOLD Woman Over 40 campaign is evolving. Networking events, a travelling exhibition and mentorship programs are in the works, creating spaces where women can connect and grow together. Beyond that, photography workshops focused on storytelling and business development are coming. Whatever comes next, one thing remains constant: the mission to help women see themselves in their fullest, most powerful light.
